The Camera App

Smart Learners confidently navigate and harness their device and learning applications

We are learning how to use the camera app on our iPad

  • Share images on the Apple TV taken during previous Kawa of Care lessons. What do learners notice?

  • Bring what I know - what do learners already know about using a camera? Pair share opportunity.

  • Model how to find the camera button on the iPad via the Apple TV. Reference the laminated icons. Learners locate the camera button on their iPads.

  • Model how to take a photo of something specific. Show learners successful photo via the Apple TV. Identify criteria for a successful photo. Record and display in class and on blog to reference.

  • Learners to follow the teacher's instructions to take photos of specific objects. eg. take a photo of something green, something small, something in the playground.

  • Talk about how we are trying out and experimenting

  • Model how you can look at the photos you have taken through the camera roll. Learners view their own photos. Opportunity for pair share.

Reflect: Can I use the camera App to take a photo? Could I take photos of what my teacher asked me to? What do I need to think about next time I take a photo?

Taking photos is another opportunity for learners to revisit and demonstrate connecting with the actions/expectations in the Kawa of Care and how they are taking care of their iPad.

Preparation:

Photo Tips:

  • Have a learner model with their iPad displayed on the Apple TV

  • Stand at a table to photograph objects from a birds eye view.

  • Demonstrate tapping the shutter button once. Have learners tap their finger on the back of their hand first so they can connect with the difference between a tap and holding the shutter to take burst of photos.

  • Introduce the burst feature at a later stage.

We are learning how to share our photos via the Apple TV

  • Model how to connect to the Apple TV on an iPad.

  • Choose learners to connect to the Apple TV and share the photo/s they have taken.

  • Opportunity to compare/contrast photos.

  • Learners reflect on their progress. Compare their photos with criteria. Select their best photo to share.

  • Learners access camera roll and delete all but one photo, ready for the next learning experience.

Display laminated symbols to scaffold learners sharing via the Apple TV. The ability to read some familiar signs and symbols from their environment contributes to learners acquiring specific knowledge and skills for reading. ( Literacy Learning Progressions )

Preparation:

Exploring the iPad Control Centre

  • Model via the Apple TV how to view the iPad Control Centre (swipe up from the lower corner on iOS 12 or double click home button)

  • Explore icons that will be helpful eg Screen Mirroring, Rotation lock (recommend landscape),Volume, Brightness

  • Display laminated icons

Identify opportunities for learners to revisit and practise this learning within existing programmes of learning.

  • A record of their mathematical thinking and number learning e.g. sort objects into common groups, explore patterns, shapes and measurement and take a photo share via the Apple TV and describe.

  • Take a picture of their favourite part of a story, share via the Apple TV and retell that part of the story

  • Reading around the room and taking photos of words that start the same, group objects that start with the same letter.
