Inserting a picture in Explain Everything

Smart Learners confidently navigate and harness their device and learning applications

We are learning to insert an image in Explain Everything

  1. Model how to open Explain Everything via the Apple TV. The icon should display in the iPad's Dock.

  2. Create a new project and add a title e.g. photos

  3. Recommend EE projects include learner's first name before the title as it is easier to identify files for both learners and teachers in the EE library and Google Drive.

Preparation:

  1. Insert an exisiting image from the iPad's camera roll

  2. Tap Done (at this stage ignore the image editing tools)

  3. Model how to move the photo, make it smaller, bigger, turn it around (using your fingers).

  4. Delete the photo using the Delete tool in the Toolbar

  5. Notice the tool has a purple background when selected in the Toolbar.

Exploring the Image Editor

  1. Insert an exisiting image from the iPad's camera roll.

  2. Model how to crop a photo, rotate and undo.

  3. Alert learners to the Undo tool in the Toolbar (identical symbol)

  4. Learners aim to have two cropped images inserted in Explain Everything. One crop using the lasso tool and one with the rectangular tool.

  5. Share via the Apple TV

  6. Save and close the project

Support learners to routinely close EE projects and all open Apps before storing their iPad at the end of a session.

Tip:

When learners are using the rectangular crop tool encourage them to point their index finger and curl their other fingers and thumb in tight then draw a rectangle first to create the crop area.

Next, reposition and resize the rectangle to match area they want to crop.

Reflect: Can I insert a photo from my iPad into Explain Everything? Can I move it around with my finger? Can I crop it?

Share feedback on their learning (via Apple TV or Pair Share)

For example:

  • Where they were successful. Share via the Apple TV what they did well today.

  • What did I need help with today? What did I find tricky?

  • When I was learning how to _______________ I was pleased with ______________________

  • I am confident at _______________

Identify opportunities for learners to revisit and practise this learning within exisiting programmes of learning.

  • A record of their mathematical thinking and number learning e.g. sort objects into common groups, explore patterns, shapes and measurement. Take a photo and share via the Apple TV, describe.

  • Take a picture of their favourite part of a story, share via the Apple TV and retell that part of the story

  • Reading around the room and taking photos of words that start the same, group objects that start with the same letter.

Support learners to step through the following routine before using their iPads or returning to storage.

  • Explain Everything project is saved and closed before closing App. Tap the first or title page of the EE project before closing. The EE app is opened next it should open on the EE Home screen.

  • Double click home button and check all Apps are closed

  • Open Safari and hold finger on the Tabs icon for two counts. Close All Tabs
