Explain Everything Toolbar
Smart Learners confidently navigate and harness their device and learning applications
We are learning to use the Explain Everything Toolbar
Think/Pair/Share: What do I already know about the Toolbar. Learners should have connected with the Delete and Undo tools in the previous lesson.
Open saved EE project from previous lesson. Model how to locate this project. Notice the project title and preview image in the library to help us find it.
Introduce the Slide Sorter or revisit how to use and navigate.
Model each of the tools and provide learners the opportunity to try out/experiment on their explain everything project.
Preparation:
Explore the Explain Everything site including how-to videos and instructions
Learners use the saved Explain Everything project from the previous lesson. At this stage consider using one project while learning to use the new tools.
Select and display relevant laminated symbols to scaffold learners
Introduce the Slide Sorter via the Apple TV. This displays the slide sorter menu, that allows you to sort, delete and duplicate individual slides.
Identify opportunities to create new slides, navigate and sort slides via the slide sorter.
Draw Tool:
Locate the Draw tool in the Toolbar and model how to select the Draw Width from the Draw Tool options.
Which width might be the best to write with?
Experiment drawing lines with different widths.
Use the undo tool or delete tool to remove.
Use the draw tool to:
Label the pictures you have previously inserted
Rainbow Writing - write your name using a different colour for each letter
The drawing colour is chosen via one of the colour pickers (see below)
Colour picker:
In Draw Tool, Highlighter, Paint Bucket Fill, and Shape Tool menus there are 5 colour pickers that can be individually set to any colour.
Tap one of these 5 exisiting colours to view the Colour Picker.
Each tool that uses Colour Picker will retain Colour Picker settings made in other tools.
Rainbow Writing
Drawing an object using shapes only e.g. robot, house, rocket, provides opportunities for learners to develop confidence using the Colour Picker
Text Tool:
locate the Text tool icon and tap to select the Text tool
tap on the canvas to insert a text box. (this tool will retain the previously selected setting)
explore the text preferences and select colour, border, font, size, alignment
type your name - don't forget the capital letter
close keyboard, select Hand tool and experiment with repositioning and resizing text box using your fingers.
select Hand tool, tap the Text box and try resizing the text box using the resize icon in the lower right corner. Tap the Check to close the text box.
Tip: If the keyboard splits or undocks, hold on the close keyboard icon and options to Dock and Merge the keyboard will display. Model this for learners on the Apple TV as this can often happen by mistake.
Select and display relevant laminated symbols to scaffold learners
Tip: tapping an already existing text box allows you to edit the text within it.
Recommend learners tap to select the Hand tool then tap the exisiting text box to edit.
This avoids creating a second text box rather than allowing them to edit and existing text box.
Reflect:
Can I change the width and colour of the draw tool? Can I create a text box and change the colour, border, font, size, alignment?
In response to your learners you might consider introducing the Paint Bucket Fill. Model the need to draw a closed shape to fill using the Paint Bucket.
Share feedback on their learning (via Apple TV or Pair Share)
For example:
Where they were successful. Share via the Apple TV what they did well today.
What did I need help with today? What did I find tricky?
