Explain Everything Record Voice
Smart Learners confidently navigate and harness their device and learning applications
We are learning to use the recording tool to record our voice.
Preparation:
Teachers understand why learners use the recording tool vs the Audio tool (see below)
Before introducing the recording tool identify a known artefact so the focus is on learning how to navigate the record tools e.g. image and text from a familiar reader, original piece of writing with photo or illustration created by the learner. This can be added to the exisiting EE project learners have been using for previous lessons.
Review the actions below and chunk learning in response to your learners.
Select and display relevant laminated symbols to scaffold learners.
Include sufficient time and opportunities for learners to experiment and share the process via the Apple TV.
Display the recording icons at the bottom of the project on the Apple TV.
Explain that the red circle means that I want to start recording. We are going to learn how to record our voice. Model how to start recording.
Notice how the record button changes and the timer starts.
Press the pause button. Ask learners what they notice? What do they think this means?
Press the record again. Notice what happens to the timer.
Notice what happens when we tap the red/white square.
What do they think this means?
What do you think might happen if we tap the Audio icon?
Learners take some time to read the text on their EE slide and record themselves.
Play and pause their recording
Disclose the timeline and move the playhead
Share their recording via the Apple TV
What do you think might happen when tapping the Audio icon, fast forward, rewind?
Tap the disclose icon to view the timeline and your recording.
Notice the playhead (red vertical line)
Notice what happens when tapping play or moving the playhead
Timeline
For more help using and editing the Timeline in Explain Everything open the Explain-Everything-User-Manual and search the keyword Timeline.
Also see the Explain Everything website: includes screencast and timeline editing in a nutshell.
Why we insert teacher voice using the Audio tool in the Toolbar vs using the recording tool when creating Explain Everything projects.
The Audio tool in the EE Toolbar enables teachers to record their voice and insert brief instructions as Sound Bites in EE activities. The Audio tool:
is easily recognised as an object (sound bite) in the EE slide
can be replayed to scaffold learning at anytime
frees the recording tool for learners to record their voice and/or actions in the Explain Everything project.
support learners to connect with the term sound bite, recognise these in the EE and understand the purpose.
Tip: don't lock the soundbite as often learners can't play it from a downloaded EE project.
Identify opportunities for learners to revisit and practise this learning within exisiting programmes of learning.
A record of their mathematical thinking and number learning e.g. sort objects into common groups, explore patterns, shapes and measurement and take a photo. Record themselves talking about/describing what they have created. Share via the Apple TV.
Take a picture of their favourite part of a story record themselves retelling that part of the story.
Building reading Mileage - Recommendations for Chromebooks and Screencastify can also be adapted using the recording tool in EE.
